But one of the best displays of Christmas cheer, and something that will get everyone excited for the holidays, is the massive Christmas tree in Market Square right in front of North Church.

The Market Square Christmas Tree in Portsmouth, New Hampshire has been a staple in the city for many decades. The tree is often at least 35 feet tall and is decorated with many huge ornaments and thousands of lights. It is the centerpiece of the city during the month of December and a sight admired by locals and tourists alike. Photographers are known to travel many miles to photograph the tree too!

When it comes to seeing the tree, it typically is put up in late November or early December. It is officially lit on the first Saturday evening in December. Each year, Portsmouth’s Mayor has the honor of flipping the larger-than-life switch to light up the tree. Following the tree lighting, there are carols sung by the Portsmouth Middle and High School Holiday Ensemble. Additionally, a full parade follows the lighting. At 6pm, the Illuminated Holiday Parade begins. It features floats, marching bands, police vehicles, fire trucks, dancers, and, of course, Santa Claus!
