About This Location

Nestled just a short distance from the capital city of Augusta, Long Pond graces the picturesque landscape of the renowned Belgrade Lakes system in Maine. This expansive pond, a gem in the heart of Belgrade and Mount Vernon, is characterized by its unique division into two distinct basins by a narrows. The southern basin, known as the lower basin, is the deepest and offers abundant habitat for both coldwater and warmwater fish species. Meanwhile, the upper or northern basin, while not as deep, also provides an ideal environment for a variety of fish.

What sets Long Pond apart from many other bodies of water is its remarkable shoreline, which has largely remained undeveloped. Aside from sections of the eastern shore of the northern basin, where the charming village of Belgrade Lakes is nestled, and the scenic Castle Island at the narrows, Long Pond's shores remain pristine and unspoiled.

Long Pond has a rich history, particularly as a cherished destination for salmon anglers during the 1970s. The state of Maine, recognizing its potential, managed Long Pond to enhance its salmon fishery, implementing various restrictions to bolster the salmon population. However, over the past four decades, the number of salmon in the Belgrade Lakes has significantly declined, reflecting a troubling trend across the state.

Despite the challenges faced by the salmon fishery, Long Pond continues to be a popular destination for anglers, boasting a thriving smallmouth bass population that lures fishing enthusiasts throughout the open water season. Additionally, the pond is home to chain pickerel and white perch, providing exciting opportunities for those who seek them. In recent years, the presence of northern pike, introduced illegally into the Belgrade system, has been noted, sparking interest among anglers. However, the long-term impact of these large and voracious predators on the existing sport fisheries remains uncertain.

For those looking to explore Long Pond, a well-maintained state-owned boat launch and parking area awaits on the lower basin, just south of the narrows. This launch site is the perfect gateway for power boats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, and sailboats. Boaters will appreciate the substantial hard dock, spanning nearly 50 feet, which facilitates easy access. Additionally, seasonal bathroom facilities are available at the launch area. Swimmers are welcome, but it's advisable to have a spotter to ensure safety in the presence of nearby boats.

Beyond its recreational offerings, Long Pond is a haven for photographers. The pond's vast expanse provides breathtaking views of both sunrise and sunset, offering a canvas for capturing the ever-changing colors of the sky. The active boating scene and diverse wildlife further enhance the photographic opportunities. Birdwatchers will find joy in the area's rich birdlife, with occasional sightings of majestic bald eagles soaring above Long Pond, adding to its natural allure.
