About This Location

Nestled in the quaint town of Pittsburg, New Hampshire, First Connecticut Lake stands out as a stunning natural gem. As the largest of the four numbered Connecticut Lakes, it spans an impressive 3,071 acres. This glacial marvel reaches depths of 163 feet, with an average depth of 56 feet. Only seven scenic miles north of the village of Pittsburg, this lake offers both residents and visitors an idyllic escape, with only 15% of its shoreline developed, ensuring a peaceful retreat into nature.

Visitors today are welcomed with a plethora of recreational activities. The well-maintained family beach beckons children and adults alike, providing a safe haven for frolicking in shallow waters. The bolder swimmers often make their way to a nearby island. Adjacent to the beach, picnic spots dot the shoreline, perfect for both sunny and shaded outings. Those keen on water activities can indulge in canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing. Lopstick staff offer various boat rentals, ensuring everyone gets a chance to enjoy the pristine waters.

Summer isn't the only season to enjoy First Connecticut Lake. During winter, anglers flock to its frozen surface to fish for lake trout and perch. This winter fishing season stretches from January 1 through March 31, while the ice's presence generally spans late December to mid-April.

Angling is particularly popular, drawing enthusiasts year-round. The deep waters harbor lake trout and salmon, especially tempting for boat fishermen. Notably, fishing for lake trout runs from January 1 to September 30, with a daily limit set at two fish and a minimum length requirement of 18 inches. Landlocked salmon also attract anglers from April 1 to September 30, with the daily quota being two fish, each measuring at least 15 inches.

Three public boat launch locations cater to visitors. The developed launch near the dam on US Route 3 offers ample parking for both vehicles and trailers. Smaller boats, kayaks, and canoes are best launched from the gravel site near Stewart Young Road or the end of Camp Otter Road, though parking is limited at these sites.

Wildlife enthusiasts have a treat waiting for them at First Connecticut Lake. Sightings include majestic ospreys, eagles, and several pairs of nesting loons. The shores might also reveal moose, deer, seagulls, and foxes, adding a touch of wilderness to the experience.

A noteworthy point of interest is the marker along the southwestern shore of the lake. It commemorates Luther Parker, a significant figure from the Republic of Indian Stream in the 1830s. The lake also houses "tailwater" dams, unique because their discharged water originates from the lake's bottom. This ensures the water remains cool throughout the summer, making it perfect for trout.

Free parking is available at the First Connecticut Lake Picnic Area at 3024 North Main Street, Pittsburg, New Hampshire. This prime location is also home to the lake's well-maintained beach, an ideal spot to spend a summer's day.

Visitors bringing along their furry friends should be aware of any dog-related policies. And while the lake encourages a plethora of activities, it's crucial to respect its rules and regulations, ensuring it remains a haven for all to enjoy. Dogs are welcome at First Connecticut Lake. They should be on leash when others are around. Many dogs enjoy swimming and jumping off the docks!

In essence, First Connecticut Lake is more than just a water body; it's a testament to nature's grandeur and a symbol of the community's dedication to preserving its pristine beauty. Whether you're an avid angler, a nature enthusiast, or just someone looking to relax, First Connecticut Lake promises a memorable experience.
